BATTERED AND WRECKED

I heard a radio host,
probably in a Wellington studio,
describe the landscape
of Christchurch
as battered and wrecked.

It brought to mind the image
of half-finished fish and chips
bloodied with tomato sauce,
salt in its wounds,
discarded,
begging from a curb-side
somewhere along Manchester Street
to be returned
to its previously convenient
hot and seductive
deep-fried
desirability.
