THE BULLY WITHIN (poem)

A good night’s sleep
recharges the batteries
of the bully within me,
who, re-invigorated,
doesn’t hesitate to gather together
his little gang of cohorts
so they can all sit around
and plot which flaw
they will pick on today;
which weakness
they want to pin down
and twist the nose off of.

Often, he also likes to invent
a nasty rumour
and have his gang spread it around
in such a strategic manner,
that by the time I,
its innocent subject,
become aware of its content,
the rumour will have already
preceded me
through the halls,
the classes,
and changing rooms of the day,
to the point where,
having been repeated so much
it might
just as well,
when that school bell rings,

be the truth.
